Woods at Seaside ~Eternal Flow~

ikasu | Stand : AA08

This captivating artwork draws inspiration from the boundless beauty of the sea and sky, utilizing creatively sliced tree branches, encased in a paulownia wood frame, taken from antique kimono chests-of-drawers. The fusion of these elements encapsulates a narrative rich in storytelling and opulence, aiming to showcase the splendor of Japanese nature. Through the innovative upcycling of two retired kimonos and discarded bark, the piece seamlessly weaves together Japanese silk, paulownia (used for framing), and pine (for central decoration) to vividly depict the magnificence of nature. The central bark decoration, comprised of interwoven pine, oak, and other tree barks, intricately merges with kimono patterns of blue ocean waves and clouds, creating an authentic and tangible natural atmosphere. Originating from the late Showa period (1960-80ies), the kimonos employed in this artwork feature symbolic patterns. The left kimono, with its ocean wave motif, represents Seigaiha waves, symbolizing good fortune and aspirations for eternal happiness and tranquility. The right fabric, adorned with cloud patterns using the "Yose-komon" technique, showcases the ever-shifting shapes and colors of clouds, evoking a sense of mystery and anticipation. The characteristics of the fabrics are as remarkable as their history. The left kimono, initially intended for formal occasions, stands out with its lustrous ivory backdrop and sea waves woven into it. The right fabric, employing the Edo komon technique, appears as a solid color from a distance, revealing intricate details upon closer inspection. The frame, crafted from paulownia wood, not only serves as a testament to Japan's rich tradition of utilizing this lightweight, moisture-resistant material in crafting furniture and chests but also highlights its historical connection to kimono culture. Paulownia chests, popularized during the Edo period, offered fire resistance and protection for cherished kimonos. Additionally, the decorative bark at the artwork's center, crafted from pine, pays homage to Japanese tradition deeply rooted in culture. The entire composition resonates with a harmonious blend of nature, history, and artistic innovation, offering a visually stunning representation of Japanese heritage.
