The frame of this artwork is crafted from antique Kiritansu, repurposed paulownia wood from kimono chests-of-drawers, adding an authentic touch of the traditional wabisabi spirit. The technique of "kintsugi" inspired this work - the pieces of antique kimono are "united" using golden washi paper, giving them a new life as artwork. The kimono used in this piece dates back to the late Showa period (around 1960-80s). It features a modern arrangement with gold Japanese traditional washi paper running through shades of brown stripes, depicting branches and leaves. Upon closer inspection, intricate "fawn pattern" traditional dyeing is revealed, symbolizing prosperity and vitality. Delicate branches and leaves outlined with gold leaf enhance the elegance of the design, while the use of kimpaku technique adds luxuriousness to the fabric. Kimpaku involves applying gold leaf onto various surfaces, creating shimmering accents and highlights. It requires skill and precision, traditionally used in garments worn by the nobility and aristocracy, symbolizing wealth and refinement. The frame, made of paulownia wood, reflects the refined beauty of Japanese nature. Paulownia wood, known for its lightness, luster, and resilience, has been used in crafting furniture and chests since ancient times. It is closely linked to kimono culture, symbolizing protection and prosperity. Following the Ansei Earthquake in the late Edo period (19th cent.), paulownia chests gained popularity for their ability to withstand fires and floods, safeguarding precious belongings. Overall, this artwork embodies a fusion of artistic expression, craftsmanship, and cultural tradition, showcasing the beauty of Japanese textiles and woodworking while symbolizing prosperity, elegance, and resilience.
