Dragonfly Fairy ~Progress~

ikasu | Stand : AA08

This captivating artwork draws inspiration from the humid summers of Japan. It is framed in paulownia wood, originally used for kimono chests-of-drawers. The elegant use of paulownia wood, closely associated with kimono culture, imbues the piece with storytelling and authentic antique atmosphere. The creation of this artwork sought to encapsulate the magnificence of Japanese nature, featuring dragonflies gracefully navigating through river grass. Traditional elements such as the obi belt fabric, representing Japanese culture, and wood, a pivotal component in Japanese craftsmanship, converge to breathe life into this vision. The artist employed over 100 years old obi belt and branch slices, emphasizing sustainability through upcycling. The amalgamation of Japanese natural materials—silk, paulownia (for framing), and pine (for the central bark decoration)—combined with natural patterns of grass and dragonflies, articulates the splendid beauty of Japanese nature from diverse perspectives. A distinguishing feature of this work is the central bark decoration, intricately weaving pine, oak, and other tree barks among the painted grass on the obi. This creates a tangible and authentic natural atmosphere, heightening the visual and sensory experience. Dragonflies, significant in Japanese culture, symbolize courage, strength, and happiness. Rooted in folklore and art, their symbolism extends to embodying change, joy, and seasonal significance in summer. The positive and multi-faceted symbolism of dragonflies reflects Japan's profound connection between nature and cultural expression. The frame, crafted from paulownia wood, not only adds to the artwork's aesthetic appeal but also carries cultural significance. Paulownia, known for its lightness, luster, moisture resistance, and crack resilience, has been used in crafting furniture, chests, and instruments since ancient times. Linked to kimono culture, it played a role in safeguarding cherished garments from fire and moisture. The central decorative bark, crafted from pine, further deepens the piece's connection to Japanese tradition and culture. This meticulous choice of materials and craftsmanship underscores the artist's commitment to both artistic expression and the rich symbolism of Japanese heritage.
