Meet the Artists

This year, ART ORIENTAL LTD will showcase a diverse roster of talented artists, each bringing their unique perspectives and styles to the global stage:

Qiu Tianyun

Young artist Qiu Tianyun’s work transcends cultural and linguistic boundaries, delving into the deepest vulnerabilities and existential reflections of the human experience. Her art is not merely a depiction of faces but a visual and spiritual dialogue, where each expression carries traces of fear, solitude, struggle, and enlightenment.

In the profound interplay of light and shadow, pain and contemplation merge, blurring the lines between reality and illusion. The viewer is drawn to the edge of self-awareness, confronting the truth of the soul. Her work provokes essential questions: What is the self? What is existence? Do suffering and salvation coexist?

Shadows of the Soul is more than a visual presentation—it is a mirror reflecting the hidden depths of human consciousness, guiding viewers to seek their own answers between darkness and light.

Zhang Ming

Born in 1975 in Hunan, China, Zhang Ming is a highly regarded independent artist based in Shenzhen, widely recognized for his innovative contributions to contemporary Chinese ink painting and oracle bone script art. As a visiting professor at the College of Fine Arts and Design at Hunan University of Science and Technology, he plays a significant role in shaping the next generation of Chinese artists.

Zhang Ming’s work stands at the forefront of artistic innovation, seamlessly blending traditional Chinese ink techniques with modern abstraction and expressionism. His deep exploration of oracle bone script—a writing system that dates back over 3,000 years—has led to a groundbreaking reinterpretation of ancient symbols within a contemporary artistic context. By merging calligraphic heritage with avant-garde visual language, his art embodies a unique dialogue between history and modernity.

In China, Zhang Ming is recognized as a leading figure in contemporary ink art, pushing the boundaries of this traditional medium through bold experimentation in composition, texture, and conceptual depth. His works have been exhibited in prestigious galleries and art institutions, gaining critical acclaim for their ability to bridge the past and the present, reflecting both the cultural legacy and the evolving artistic landscape of China.

Through his artistic practice, Zhang Ming not only preserves the essence of Chinese ink art but also pioneers new directions that challenge conventional perceptions. His work serves as a testament to the dynamic evolution of Chinese visual culture in an era of globalization.

Zhang Xiangyi

Zhang Xiangyi is an outstanding young Chinese ink art creator who builds on traditional techniques and integrates modern artistic language and innovative thinking to create highly distinctive ink works. His artworks not only preserve the cultural essence of traditional Chinese ink painting but also explore contemporary aesthetics, showcasing a unique blend of Eastern ambience and global vision.

Barry John MBE

A celebrated Welsh soldier and artist, Barry John served in the British armed forces for over 23 years. His experiences during his service have deeply influenced his art, which often reflects themes of resilience, identity, and cultural fusion.

Beyond his art, Barry John is the founder of The VC Gallery, a charity based in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. The gallery uses art to support veterans, older people, and the local community, helping them express themselves creatively and overcome challenges such as PTSD and mental health issues.

Jeffrey Phillips

Jeffrey Phillips is an acclaimed Welsh artist known for his environmental and heritage-themed works, which draw upon his deep connection to the industrial landscape of South Wales and his passion for storytelling through art. His work often explores the intersection of nature, history, and culture, creating captivating pieces that evoke emotional responses while preserving important stories and historical narratives.
