Painting with Intention: A Conversation with Zeina Zaki

5-APRIL-2025

At World Art Dubai, we love delving into the creative minds of the artists who bring our vibrant exhibition to life. Today, we sit down with Zeina Zaki, whose work captivates audiences with its emotional depth and striking visual narratives. For Zaki, painting is more than just technique—it’s about communication, emotion, and intention.

The Thought Behind the Brushstrokes

For Zaki, “painting with intention” means pouring care, attention, and consciousness into every piece. Whether it’s a bold composition or a delicate play of colour, each decision is deliberate—aimed at making a silent image speak volumes.

“The intention isn’t always elaborate; sometimes, it’s as simple as showcasing a beautiful shade or an intriguing shape,” she explains. “But that intention gives the work its soul—a sense of existence that resonates with the viewer.”

Constructing a Painting: Where Does It Begin?

The process starts with form and composition—how the subject is framed, positioned, and coloured. Every element carries symbolic weight, shaping the story the painting tells.

“I experiment with different compositions first,” says Zaki. “It’s about finding the best way to express the narrative visually.”

While some artists dive in intuitively, Zaki, pictured below, emphasises planning and sketching as crucial steps. “If the structure isn’t clear, the message gets lost.”

Colour as a Language

One of the most powerful tools in Zaki’s work is colour. It’s not just about aesthetics—it’s about emotion, culture, and personal resonance.

“I spend a lot of time researching and mixing colours,” she shares. “They hold so much meaning—shaping how a viewer connects with the piece.”

The Challenge of Translating Emotion

The hardest part? Turning intangible feelings into something visual. “You have to assign meaning to shapes, colours, and compositions in a way that others can understand,” she admits.

Yet, Zaki doesn’t dictate how viewers should interpret her work. “I prefer leaving it open-ended. Everyone brings their own experiences to a painting, and that’s beautiful.”

Advice for Fellow Artists

For those struggling to find their artistic voice, Zaki offers this wisdom:

“Start by asking yourself—why do you want to create this? Even if it’s a simple reason, it matters. Then, focus on translating that emotion into visuals. Paint what you feel.”
