Ria Dian: Exploring Human Evolution and Perception at World Art Dubai 2025
Discover the transformative power of art with Ria Dian’s Evolution in Pillows project, a thought-provoking exploration of human perception and the plasticity of identity.
World Art Dubai 2025, the Middle East’s largest retail art fair, is set to showcase a diverse array of artists from around the globe, each bringing their unique perspective to the world of art. Among the standout participants is Ria Dian, an interdisciplinary artist whose work delves into the complexities of human perception, transformation, and evolution. Through her innovative use of mixed-media installations, Dian invites viewers to question their understanding of identity and the world around them.
The Concept of Physicality and Transformation
Ria Dian approaches her art like an anthropologist, researching the human capacity for change and transformation. Her work focuses on the physicality of materials and how they respond to external factors, pushing the boundaries of recognizability and meaning. By experimenting with the flexibility and plasticity of materials, Dian creates art that challenges viewers to see the world with fresh, wonder-filled eyes. Her goal is to awaken curiosity and intellectual enthusiasm, encouraging a deeper exploration of the self and the universe.
The Evolution in Pillows Project
One of Dian’s most compelling works, Evolution in Pillows, reimagines the concept of human evolution. This project explores the idea that evolution might look entirely different from what we’ve come to accept—perhaps in new colours, shapes, or with different players. Through the use of textile materials, Dian tells the stories of individuals who have strived to become better versions of themselves, passing down their ideas through generations. The project invites viewers to consider alternative theories of human origins and to reflect on what the future of humanity might look like.
“I have always sought answers to questions that have accompanied humanity for centuries. We have a widely accepted theory of evolution, but it could be completely different. What if evolution looks different, in new colors, forms, or with different actors? Will we be able to understand that it's still the same person whose ancestor was an ape?,” Dian said.
“I want to find the boundary where it becomes clear that something new is happening, something not tied to age-old beliefs and history. In my work, there is a coded message about the plasticity of people's basic perceptions of themselves and the history of their origins. The viewer should see an alternative theory of human emergence, one that resonates with them personally.”
